Engineering - Level 1 NVQ Certificate in Performing Engineering Operations (for students aged 14-16) at Wakefield College

Course description

This qualification covers the fundamental skills and knowledge common to all engineering practices, including health and safety requirements and communicating engineering information. It offers an extensive choice and flexibility for learners to demonstrate competence in one or more of a broad variety of engineering activities.

Course content

What students will study

The programme has two compulsory units:

* working safely in an engineering environment 
* developing yourself and working with other people
Plus two or more optional units: 
* making components using hand tools and fitting techniques 
* engineering machining 
* assembling mechanical components 
* working with sheet metal 
* working with thick plate 
* joining using welding techniques 
* using oxy-fuel gas cutting equipment 
* assembling electrical circuits
Maths and English are key elements of any full-time programme of study in College. If you do not already have a GCSE at grade A*-C in these subjects, you will need to attend sessions allocated on your timetable. These are varied and designed to cater for all ability levels. You will receive advice and guidance regarding the correct level for you.
Skills in Maths and English will support your full-time course, assisting you with assignment writing, research, job applications, presentations, managing your own finances and interpretation of data, to mention just a few. They will also help you in the future. Most employers are looking for ability in these areas and the majority of university courses require you to have Maths and English GCSEs at A*-C. This is why the development of Maths and English is so important, whatever your field of study.

Entry requirements

Predicted grades 1-4 in 4 subjects at GCSE including English and Maths
Minimum Entry Level 3 in English and Maths at initial assessment
A genuine interest in the subject/profession
A good reference from Head of Year 10 or Headteacher


You’ll be assessed through portfolio building and assessment of practical tasks.

      The Castleford Campus (previously known as the skillsXchange) houses the College’s provision in Construction, Motor Vehicle, Engineering, Hair and Beauty, IT and some Care and replaces the training which was previously offered at the College’s Whitwood Campus.

      Located at Junction 32 of the M62 between Castleford and Pontefract, the site is well known for Xscape, the indoor ski slope whose building houses a 14-screen cinema, bowling alley, climbing wall, sports facilities and restaurants. The Campus is situated directly next to the Asda in Glasshoughton.

      A learning resource centre, equipped with the very latest in technology, is a superb place for individual study, or to relax and use the internet. The Centre overlooks the large external courtyard, where students can mix, mingle and chill.

      In state-of-the-art hair and beauty salons, including a nail bar, we are training the next generation of hairdressers and beauticians. These professional salons offer live training environments to our students, with treatments for both men and women available at affordable prices. There are also industry standard facilities for the study of construction and engineering, motor vehicle and electrical courses.
