BTEC First Diploma – Level 2   Public Services (DOUBLE OPTION)What is the B.T.E.C first diploma in public services? The course has been designed to equip learners with the knowledge, understanding and skills required for entry into the Public Services. Learners who successfully complete this qualification can then look to seek employment within a wide range of public service sector occupations, such as the armed forces, nursing, police, prison service, fire service and security. What do students study? This course is a 6-unit qualification which consists of 3 core units and 3 specialist units. The course will provide learners with a realistic picture of public services and the relevant entry requirements. Units 1) The Public services. This unit provides an insight into the range of work undertaken by the Public Services and the different career opportunities that exist. 2) The public service skills. This is an in depth look at all the entrance requirements of the public services. Learners will be expected to sit mock interviews and complete genuine psychometric tests in accordance with their chosen career 3) Public service fitness. This is an in depth look at the major body systems and how they affect our health and physical Well being. Public service physical entrance tests will be undertaken and certificated. 4) Crime and its effects. The aim of this unit is to assist learners to develop awareness into crime and the effects upon society, community and individuals. 5) Sport, outdoor activities and recreation in the public services. This unit provides the learner with an introduction to the role of sport and recreation today and the way that different public services use such activities for the benefit of the service and their members 6) The individual and society This unit provides learners with the opportunity to explore how society works. Equal opportunities and government policies How are students taught? · Students are taught in mixed ability groups · They receive 3 lessons a week · Homework is set twice a week from a variety of tasks including research, extended writing, source questions, worksheets How will students learn on the Public Services course? A variety of teaching methods are used in order to enhance the learning of all students including textbooks, worksheets, ICT, Talks from outside Public services, videos and DVDs, role play, group work, display work, research, source work and field trips. Assessment

How will students be assessed for their course? · This is a non exam course. Students will build a portfolio of evidence. This will comprise of Knowledge and understanding. Research. Questions and answers and coursework. · Students will need to undertake and pass Public service “bleep” and physical entrance tests. · 3 grades are obtainable. These are Pass, merit and distinction. · N.B Due to the very physical nature of this course students undertaking the public services BTEC will need to be physically fit and preferably taking PE as a GCSE option
