Media Studies A Level at Acton High School

Course description

In this course, students will examine the role the media plays in our everyday lives before creating their own professional media product. The key concepts of Language, Institution, Audience and Representation will be explored across a variety of media topics.

Course content

AS Level

G321 Foundation Portfolio in Media, 50% of AS (25% of A Level)

Practical coursework unit. Candidates choose from a series of briefs (print, video, audio) and create their own media production. Candidates can work independently or in groups.

G322 Key Media Concepts (TV Drama), 50% of AS (25% of A Level)

Written exam. Section A covers representation in TV Drama. Section B involves analysis of the institutions and audience associated with a media industry, currently the music industry. (2hrs)

A2 Level

G324 Advanced Portfolio in Media, 25% of A Level

Practical coursework unit. Candidates produce a media portfolio using a combination of two or more media (one main task and two ancillary tasks). Candidates can work independently or in groups.

G325 Critical Perspectives in Media, 25% of A Level

Written exam. Theoretical analysis of practical work and contemporary media issues. (2hrs)

Entry requirements

GCSE English at grade C or above

Future opportunities

A Level Media is a good stepping-stone to a degree in English, Media or Film - including more practical production-based degrees. The major coursework projects provide genuine skills for the workplace: project management, meeting deadlines, creative problem solving and using technology.
