German at East Leake Academy

Course description

As a UK citizen you must be prepared to compete in a global market and English is not enough. 92% of the world’s population does not speak English as a fi rst language and 74% does not speak English at all. Languages are well respected by universities and employers, where knowledge of a foreign language signifi cantly enhances your job prospects and employability.

The AS German course builds on the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing developed at GCSE level, covering the four topic areas of Media, Popular Culture, Healthy Living/Lifestyle and Family/Relationships.

A2 German extends the course to include the Environment, the Multicultural Society, Contemporary Social Issues and a Cultural topic based on a region, period of 20th century history or the work of an author/ dramatist/artist from the German speaking world. We also use Kerboodle, the online resource package. There is a greater emphasis on communication and using the internet to practise your skills and research current issues in the German speaking world. As an integral part of the course students will develop their independent learning skills through Internet research and keeping up to date with current news and events in Germany.

As part of the AS level course we have offered work experience opportunities in Germany and opportunities for personal contact with students through our partner school in Kirchzarten, Germany.
