Biology AS/A2 at Christ's College Guildford

Course description

Biology is the study of life.  The course is as diverse as the living world itself.  Although you will explore applied topics such as the mode of action of durgs, biosensors, stem cells, cloning and genetic manipulation, the course concentrates mainly on an in-depth study and understanding of the fundamental processes of life.  In most cases, the human situation is compared to that of other organisms with an emphasis on evolutionary relationships and adaptation.  If you want a challenging, rigorous and varied A level course, then AS Biology is the option for you.

Unit 1 - Biology & Disease

Unit 2 - The Variety of Living Organisms

Unit 3 - Pracitcal Investigation

Unit 4 - Populations & Environment

Unit 5 - Control in Cells and Organisms

Unit 6 - Practical Investigation

The course is delivered using a wide range of teaching styles, including experimental work, group work, discussions, short talks and poster presentations by students.  Key facts and concepts are delivered using: interactive hand-outs, videos, practical demonstrations and extensive use of ICT.

Entry requirements

Any potential student must have gained 5 good A* to C GCSE grades including English and Maths. Students are expected to have achieved B grades in two Science GCSE’s. Due to the mathematical content of the course, it is advised candidates have a grade B in Mathematics too.

Future opportunities

Biology can lead to careers in an enormous variety of areas including Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Science and other Biomedical vocations.  It also provides the foundation for branches of the Biological Services, such as Physiology, Biochemistry, Ecology, Pharmacology, Marine Biology and others.

    • Now in its third year, the Sixth Form Centre has been created to ensure that all students can benefit from its facilities to help maximise their potential. With five teaching spaces, a Study Room, Common Room and a Gym, the Sixth Form Centre is a bright and modern place to study. The Sixth Form Centre is separated from the main College buildings, creating a distinct community feel that is a real step up from Key Stage 4. In fact, many of our Year 13 students have commented on this saying it has the feel of a ‘supportive family’. This family feel is enhanced by the presence of the Sixth Form Team who are based in the Centre and are there to help students as they progress through their courses. The classrooms have all got an Interactive Whiteboard (IWB) system with stereo sound. There are also ‘high spec’ desktop computers in the Study Room. We have installed the latest AC compatible wireless access points allowing you to work on your own Laptops, Netbooks or iPads or to be able to borrow one of the College iPads© (which you can use in whatever room you choose). This solution allows you to work on most of the College licenced software programs on your own device(s), which therefore ensures that you can get on with your work at all times. The Study Room has individual study carrels, group work desks and even a small reference library. We endeavour to ensure it is a quiet place of study at all times. In addition to this, we have installed a fully functional fitness Gym with free weights, exercise bikes, rowing machines and an iPod dock to play music while you exercise. With a different ethos, greater emphasis on personal and private study and the facilities to match, Sixth Formers are very well prepared for university life.
