Design & Technology: Product Design A Level at Farlingaye High School

Course description

Design & Technology at A Level allows you the opportunity to exercise your initiative, imagination and resourcefulness in the examination of design problems.

It is intended that this course should provide an interesting and stimulating subject for study in the Sixth Form. Whilst the content is not seen primarily as vocational, the knowledge, understanding and skills gained are likely to be of great benefit to candidates pursuing further studies, in their personal lives, and in the world of work.

Although this course is called Product Design and is seen as a course based on resistant materials, it is suited to all areas, in particular textiles, graphic products and resistant materials. 

Course content

AS  Level

  • DT1 Written Paper 40%
  • DT2 The Design & Make Project: designing and producing a workable solution to a real problem identified by you 60%

A2 Units

  • DT3 Written Paper 40%
  • DT4 Project: Designing and producing a workable solution to a real problem identified by you from a context set by the exam board 60% 

Entry requirements

(GCSE grades): Any Design and Technology C

Assessment

Written examinations 40% Coursework 60%

Future opportunities

On successful completion of the course the qualification is particularly appropriate for entry into Higher Education, notably design-based courses.

It will also give you an advantage if you are considering entering the workplace for the first time.
