Business Studies A Level at Bilborough College
Business Studies is all about how businesses work and how they relate to the world around them. At Bilborough College, Business Studies is taught by experienced teachers who have many years of successfully preparing students for A-level examinations. They are also experienced examiners - meaning they know exactly the knowledge and skills you need to acquire to succeed. Provided you have the minimum college entry requirement (currently five grade Cs or above at GCSE) you can enrol. You will learn, through a variety of ways, not only the theory but also the reality of businesses in the community.
In your AS year you will take two modules. Unit 1 is all about planning and financing a small-to-medium-sized enterprise (SME): we'll investigate the matters of planning a business and raising finance as well as researching the market. Unit 2 is about managing
an SME and explores aspects such as managing staff, marketing goods and services and measuring performance. You will be assessed through examinations consisting of case studies.
The A2 course switches focus - to national and international businesses. The emphasis here is very much on strategic planning and the tools and techniques business leaders might use to ensure the success of their organisations. The exams this year will test your ability to grapple with more complex challenges facing businesses. There is a stronger numerical emphasis on Unit 3, while Unit 4 requires a well-rounded background knowledge of a number of real businesses and how they are responding to the pressures the competitive environment places on them.
To study Business Studies at Bilborough, you need a grade C or above in GCSE English and Maths as well as in Business Studies if studied at GCSE.
We have strong links with Nottingham Trent University and Loughborough University. Our students have participated in a range of activities including taster sessions and enterprise challenges. We are developing these further with the BTEC in mind and look forward to forging links particularly with our local universities as well as high-quality employers such as KPMG and PwC, with whom the college already has involvement.
A significant number of our Business Studies students have gone on to both higher education at top universities as well as into employment with prestigious employers such as British Airways, KPMG and Tenon - to name but a few. Past students have visited companies of national significance including Coca Cola and Jaguar Land Rover; we plan to arrange more opportunities along these lines. We also organise a trip to New York which adds an international dimension to your student experience.
