Drama & Theatre Studies A-Level at Egglescliffe School
Group working skills, creativity and analytical skills which apply to just about anything! You will be developing performance and/or production skills appropriate to the creation and realisation of drama and theatre. You will be working creatively and collaboratively throughout the course, working to convey ideas clearly and coherently. We will watch a wide variety of plays and you will develop the ability to analyse the ways in which the different performance and production elements are brought together to create theatre.
Year 12 AS level
Unit 1: Response to live theatre and study of one set text (Antigone by Sophocles) (60%)
Unit 2: Practical performance of an extract from a published play—this can be through a range of skills (40%) i.e. acting, set design and lighting.
Year 13 A2 level
Unit 3: Study two set texts (Moliere’s Tartuffe and Our Country’s Good by Wertenbaker) - 60%.
Unit 4: Performance of a devised drama - 40% (a range of skills available such as acting, set design and lighting etc.).
There will be lots of opportunities to be included in performances such as; the Christmas production where year 12 take on the main roles. Commitment is vital and attendance at rehearsals outside of lesson will be required. You will also attend performances of plays both in school and at local theatres.
5+ A*-C grades in GCSEs or equivalent qualifications including English Language and Maths.
Enthusiasm, commitment and enjoyment of drama and theatre are essential. You will be expected to get involved in practical drama/theatre work in lessons i.e. reading, performing and developing acting skills through exploration of a range of acting techniques and rehearsal methods. It is very advantageous to have GCSE in Drama but this is not essential. Involvement in drama groups both in and outside school is also very useful.
Are there any expenses involved?
There will be expenses incurred for theatre visits etc.
A number have gone on to study drama at university and drama schools and several ex students are now professional actors. Others have gone into TV, broadcasting, playwrights, directors and film. Several have gone into teaching both at primary and secondary level and at least one is now lecturing in higher education. There are a wide range of other areas students have gone on to work in , such as,; health care, law and speech and language therapy.
