Carpentry and Joinery Level 1 Diploma at Stafford College

Course description

This course is aimed at school leavers and people not already working in the sector and who are considering making a career in wood occupations. The programme includes both classroom and workshop content, with approximately equal emphasis on both forms of learning.  Successful completion of this course is one of the entry requirements for progression onto the Level 2 Diploma in Site Carpentry.

Course content

The following units are all mandatory and provide a good foundation for anyone working in the field of Wood Occupations.  Teaching will be split between theory and practical:

 

  • Carry out safe working practices in construction
  • Information, quantities and communicating with others 1
  • Building methods and construction technology 1
  • Produce basic woodworking joints
  • Maintain and use carpentry and joinery hand tools
  • Prepare and use carpentry and joinery portable power tools

 

The course also includes the following mandatory components:

 

  • Functional Skills - Mathematics
  • Functional Skills - English
  • Functional Skills - Information & Communication Technology (ICT)

 

English & Maths

We are committed to helping students improve their skills in English and Maths. Students on a full-time course at College who missed out on GCSE qualifications at Grades A-C in these subjects at school will attend additional classes and receive support to enhance their grades.  Depending on individual ability, students will work towards GCSE, City & Guilds or Functional Skills Awards to ensure that they have the qualifications needed to progress to University or employment

Entry requirements

Learners must have achieved GCSEs at Grade E or above in Maths and English Language or have achieved at least Level 1 in Literacy and Numeracy, as well as a good level of dictation in the College based Initial Assessment process

Assessment

Assessment in both practical and knowledge is on-going throughout the course.  External assessment will take place at the end of the course in the form of an On-Line multiple choice examination.
