Mandarin Chinese at The New Sixth Bath

Course description

Breakthrough level: The course includes spoken and written Mandarin Chinese. In the first year, the students will learn basic conversational Chinese which they can use in social or work situations and to read and write about 200 key Chinese characters.

Preliminary or GCSE level: Students will extend their ability to converse in Chinese in a broader range of social and work situations and increase their knowledge of the written language. Students may choose to focus only on spoken Chinese or on written Chinese depending on their aptitude and goals.

Throughout the course, students will have opportunities to learn about life in contemporary China, its history and politics, its culture and traditions.

Entry requirements

This course is for beginners. While prior experience of studying a foreign language is useful, this is not obligatory.

This course is ideal for students looking for a qualification that will equip them for working in the global economy, as well as those interested in working in travel and tourism (Chinese tourists are now anincreasingly important market for travel companies). It will also interest students who enjoy the challenge of learning about and interacting with other cultures.
