Drama and Theatre Studies A Level at The John Henry Newman RC School

Course description

• AS consists of Unit 1 ‘Exploration of Drama & Theatre’:
practically exploring and analysing two contrasting plays
and evaluating live performance. Unit 2 is ‘Theatre Text in
Performance’: a practical examination of acting or design
skills in a directed production of a play and a performance
of a monologue or duologue.
• A2 consists of Unit 3, ‘Exploration of Drama Performance’:
making, performing and evaluating a devised piece of
theatre, followed by Unit 4, ‘Theatre Text in Context’: a
written examination based on three sections. Sections A
and B are the study of a play from the point of view of a
director in both an academic and practical way. Section C
is based on contemporary analysis and historical research
of a play from a choice of three periods of theatre history.
• You will develop your practical, creative and
communication skills and extend your ability to create
drama and theatre in a performing or production role.
• You will write about drama and develop your powers
of analysis to become an informed critic, studying plays,
the work of playwrights, directors, designers and theatre
practitioners.

Entry requirements

Five Grade B passes at GCSE, including English, Drama GCSE Grade C is desirable
