Building Craft Occupations CSkills Awards Level 1 Certificate at Brooklands College

Course description

This course helps to introduce you to working safely and helps you gain confidence in building craft construction skills.  You will work to recognised industrial standards and will gain the underpinning knowledge and skills to prepare you for a career in the industry. 

The college has close links to construction companies and training exercises and conditions on the course are similar to those experienced on site.

Course content

You will study and be assessed in the subjects below:
•  Apply finishing materials
•  Cut, lay and fix construction components
•  Fix construction components
•  Handle and store construction materials and components
•  Mix construction materials
•  Set out for construction components

Trips to building exhibitions and building sites are planned as part of your studies.  You can also take a health and safety test.

The course is for 16-19 year olds who wish to gain valuable skills in construction such as plastering, tiling, brickwork carpentry and decorating and wish to progress on a path trade specialisation.  Some students can decide to complete extra units to enable them to progress to the level 2 Diploma in Maintenance Operations.

Entry requirements

The course is for 16-19 year olds who have a keen interest in carpentry and joinery and have some evidence of studying at GCSE grade D and above or working at Entry Level 3 Literacy and Numeracy.


The learner’s development and achievements are assessed through practical assessments, in-course assessments and end of unit tests.

Financial information

Materials and equipment for the course are provided however, you will be expected to purchase protective footwear and overalls, as well as stationary, a recommended basic tool kit and a textbook.  Students are allocated a certain amount of free printing, after which a small fee will be incurred.

Future opportunities

Students generally progress onto the Level 1 Diploma in a specialised trade area such as brickwork, painting and decorating or carpentry.  Many students also choose to progress to the Maintenance Operations Diploma to develop their skills, however direct entry to employment or an apprenticeship are also career paths.
