Engineering Shipping and Maritime Operations - Level 3 Diploma at Blackpool and The Fylde College

Course description

Merchant Navy career is still considered to be coveted and much sought after career because of the possibility of seeing the world and getting trained while you earn high possible tax free wages.

This qualification is considered as an entry qualification for wide variety of maritime employment. Generally this course is provided to all shipping company sponsored candidates undergoing an approved training scheme to become an officer in the merchant navy. This award is now available to all non-sponsored candidates looking for careers in the merchant navy or wider maritime industry which includes river navigation, code vessel employability, off-shore market, merchant navy etc.

B&FC will ensure that all successful candidates will get an interview with the shipping/ cadet training company to get sponsorship to be a merchant navy cadet.

Course content

Level 3 – 120 Credits on Deck or Engineering Learners

Learners on this program can make their choice of Deck or Engineering once they are well in to the program of study so that you can make an informed decision based on the knowledge of maritime industry and your aptitude for the subjects.

Majority of the teaching and learning are covered by class room teaching, outdoor learning, activity based learning, ship visits and tutorials. There will also be an element of independent learning to prepare for the higher education you will progress to after this qualification.

Independent learning is mainly by e-Learning using electronic material and college’s Virtual Learning Environment (VLE)

Throughout the program of study, you will formatively assessed in the class using short pieces of work, oral examinations, report writing on the ship visits, short tests in the class etc. There will be summative exams which are either written or oral examinations under controlled conditions, for the units you study in Level 3 Diploma.

Future opportunities

At the end of the course of study, all successful candidates will be given an interview with merchant navy cadet training companies/ shipping companies where by you can get sponsorship to be trained to become an officer ion the merchant navy. B&FC will help you prepare for the interview and your report from the college with regard to your academic ability, attendance and your effort during your Level 3 Diploma will be additional help in your effort to securing a sponsorship. With a sponsorship from a shipping/ cadet training company, you will either be enrolled on to HNC/ D Marine Engineering or Foundation Degree in Marine Engineering.
