Design & Technology Product Design - Graphic Products at Guru Nanak Sikh Academy

Course description

Students will learn to identify challenging design problems, overcome them by the use of creative thinking, through the understanding of a range of processes with the influences of technological change. By achieving this, students are able to produce quality products using production techniques skilfully. The course is split into 4 units. Units 1 and 2 make up the specification for the AS course. Unit 3 and 4 make up the A2 course. The course may be taken as an A2 over the period of two years. Or students may wish to receive the AS qualification upon their successful completion of the first year. Unit 1 - 30% - internally assessed- Portfolio of Creative Skills * Product investigation-performance analysis, materials and components, manufacturing, quality. * Design folio of the chosen product - Conceptual design or built environment - design and development, communication. * The manufactured outcome - Production plan, making, testing. Unit 2 - 20% - externally assessed examination - 1hour 30 minutes * Materials - Paper and board, metals, polymers, woods, composites, modern materials and products, smart materials, components. * Industrial and commercial practice - scale of production, graphical communication, computer - generated graphics, printing processes. Modelling and prototyping, Joining techniques. * Industrial and commercial processes, Forming techniques, Finishing processes. * Quality standards, health and safety.

Future opportunities

This qualification will enable students to pursue their career by choosing from a range of relevant courses with the aims of developing a career in a wide range of areas including Graphic Design, Product Design, Architecture, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Interior Design, etc.
