EPQ - THE EXTENDED PROJECT QUALIFICATION at Selby College

Course description

The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) attracts the same UCAS points as a full AS Level. It is therefore extremely beneficial if you wish to top-up your UCAS score when applying for university entry or simply draw attention to your dedication to the subject you have chosen. It can also make a significant impression upon future employers who can recognise the skills and the commitment required to complete a successful EPQ.

Course content

This is not a taught course. You will be supervised by a trained member of staff who will ensure that the project stays on track and is awarded the highest grade that the finished work deserves.

EPQs come in two basic forms:

The Academic Study has a target length of 5000 words and must be regarded as your first ‘university level’ assignment.

You are free to choose any subject you like as the basis for your academic EPQ, but it must be sensible, viable, and sufficient research material must exist to write a solid investigation of the topic chosen.

The Artefact-Based Project will see you produce an object which may be tangible or abstract. For example, a Victorian-style evening gown or a music video would be equally acceptable. Upon the creation of the artefact, you must complete a 1000-word report detailing the path of the project and what skills have been learned along the way.

Both types of EPQ also require a presentation to an audience which roughly consists of 20 minutes presentation followed by 10 minutes of question-and-answer. The presentations are usually the closing point of the project and take place in April.

Entry requirements

Standard 'A' Level entry requirements apply.

Assessment

100% Coursework/Presentation.

Future opportunities

The EPQ is an outstanding qualification to acquire. It enhances existing skills, develops new ones, and gives you precisely the right abilities you will need at university or in the world of work.
