Applied Science BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate at Richard Huish College
Applied Science concentrates on the use of science in vocational contexts with an emphasis on technical laboratory skills. It is ideal for students seeking grounding in all threes major science disciplines: Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
These courses have greater emphasis on laboratory techniques than the Science A Levels with the aim of familiarising students with technical knowledge needed for employment in the science industry.
The core content is almost identical to modules in the A Level Science but with a greater emphasis on the use of this science in industry.
Students also have the opportunity to study other areas in more depth including; informatics in science, the human body and its organ systems, biochemistry and biochemical techniques and industrial chemical reactions.
It cannot be combined with A Level Biology, Chemistry or Physics as many topics overlap but can be paired with any other A Level or Extended Certificates and pairs particuarly well with Environmental Studies, Geology, Geography and also Archaeology and PE for progression into the Environmental Sciences, Earth Sciences or Sports Nutrition career paths.
The Extended Certificate is equivalent to one A Level
5 GCSEs at grade C or above, including Maths and English
GCSE Science or Applied Science at grade C or above
The courses are assessed by vocational orientated coursework and external assessment.
Assignments can be in written form but they are just as likely to be produced in other forms such as: presentations, practical assessments, video presentations, or experiments.
The qualification offers active learning in a vocational context, building confidence, competence and motivation through the programme. Vocational Applied Science is recognised by employers, professional institutions and higher education establishments and is closely attuned to the needs of the employers in the science marketplace.
