Engineering BTEC Level 3 Diploma at Heysham High School Sports College

Course description

The course will extend the specialist work-related focus of the BTEC Level 2 Certificate and covers the key knowledge and practical skills required in the appropriate vocational sector.  It offers greater flexibility and a choice of emphasis through the optional units.  It is equivalent to one GCE A Level.

Course content

The engineering sector continues to suffer from a skills gap and needs to keep up with rapidly developing technologies.  These qualifications in Engineering have been designed to give new entrants to the engineering sector the knowledge and skills needed to meet the needs of modern mechanical engineering industries.

In year 12 students are likely to study the following units:

  • Health and Safety in the Workplace
  • Electrical and Electronic Principles
  • Computer Aided Design

Entry requirements

A grade A/B in GCSE DT, GCSE or Level 2 Engineering or Core and Additional Science.

A grade B in GCSE Mathematics.


All units are assessed internally through coursework.  Some criteria will involve taking written tests under exam conditions.

Financial information

Folders and other stationery are needed to ensure work is organised.  You would be strongly advised to purchase the course textbook - details available from your teacher.  Access to the internet at home or at school is essential.  There may be incidental expenses for visits relating to the course.

Future opportunities

The course is fully supported by the Sector Skills Council (SSC) for the engineering sector.  A range of professional organisations and employers in the sector have also confirmed their support for this diploma.  This means it is a highly respected route for those who wish to move into employment in the sector, either directly or following further study.  The diploma also provides a well-established route into a variety of specialist HE courses, when taken alongside other qualifications appropriate for the desired course of study.  UCAS has reviewed the qualification to assess its value for access to higher education, and has allocated UCAS points.  In addition, a number of universities have confirmed that this diploma fulfils their entry requirements when achieved alongside other qualifications.
