Course description

Module 1
AS Unit G151: English Legal System

This unit is based on areas of knowledge and understanding of the English legal system. Students will find out about the civil and criminal courts, police powers, the penal system and the judiciary.

Module 2
AS Unit G152: Sources of Law

This unit is based on areas of knowledge and understanding of the English legal system. Students will find out about precedent, legislation, European Union law, and law reform.

Module 3
A2 Unit G155: Law of Contract

This module looks at the principles contract Law, including an appreciation of the underlying principles of contract law (freedom to contract, supporting commercial transactions, consumer protection). In addition, students will gain skills which include the critical awareness of the role of the principles of the contract law in the modern world.

Module 4
A2 Unit G156: Law of contract Special Study

This unit is based on pre-released materials: a special study booklet will be sent to the school, where together we will examine the topics set. Each booklet contains source material, such as extracts from judgements or Acts of Parliament or academic articles on a specific area(s) of the law of contract.

Entry requirements

We would expect all students to have at least a Grade B (preferably an A) in English Language. Also, we would also like students to have a Grade B in a literary subject such as History, Full RS and Geography.

Assessment

In Year 12 Unit G151 and G152 will be examined at the end of Year 12 (May/June). Then for A2, Unit G155 and Unit G156 will be examined at the end of Year 13 (June)

Future opportunities

Law is an extremely valuable subject to have as a qualification and will be liked by many universities due to its demanding nature. The jobs available for the Alevel course (if not taken further to degree level) include: Paralegal, Legal Executive, and many more. If the subject was taken further to university the careers available include: Solicitor or Barrister (which can lead into being a Judge).

Further information

All students will be new to Law, but to be successful you need to be able to express yourself clearly in written work. Law A -level is a demanding but highly relevant course and is suitable for students who are keen to learn about the crucial role of law in everyday life.
