French A level at Sacred Heart of Mary Girls' School

Course description

The French A Level enables students to:
  • Experience enjoyment and benefit from language learning;
  • Acquire knowledge, skills and understanding for practical use, further study and employment;
  • Communicate with speakers of the language;
  • Take their place in a multilingual global society.

Course content

Paper 1: Listening/Reading/Translation
  • Aspects of French-speaking society: current trends and issues
  • Artistic culture in the French-speaking world
  • Aspects of political life in the French-speaking world
  • Grammar
Paper 2: Film/Book
  • EITHER one book and one film OR two books from the list set in the specification
  • Grammar
Paper 3: Speaking
  • Individual research project
  • One of four themes

Entry requirements

Applicants to the Sixth Form need to have achieved a minimum of five FULL GCSEs at grade C or above as well as the entry requirements for the individual course:

It would normally be expected that Candidates would have a B at GCSE in French.

Assessment

Paper 1: Listening/Reading/Translation
  • exam: 2.5 hours
  • 160 marks in total
  • 40% of A Level
Paper 2: Film/Book
  • exam: 2 hours
  • 90 marks in total
  • 30% of A Level
Paper 3: Speaking
  • Oral exam: 21 minutes (including 5 minutes preparation time)
  • 60 marks in total
  • 30% of A Level
