Michaeljohn Training Manchester is specialist hairdressing/Barbering Training Provider based in the Northern Quarter, the style hub of Manchester city centre. Educators are recruited to provide excellent training, for up to date current and upcoming Barbering techniques. From scissor/ clipper cutting, shaving, fading and styling, training is inspirational and personalised to you. Over the last 35 years we have educated hundreds of hairdressers and barbers with hundreds of Greater Manchester employers, many of those apprentices are now salon owners, managers, technicians, assessors, TV and media session stylists.

All apprentices are employed in salons. Over 90% of our graduate learners continue in the industry they love 12 months after achievement. Upon achievement, you will receive an internationally recognised qualification with City & Guilds/ VTCT.

You will gain your barbering apprenticeship by attending Michaeljohn Training and being employed in a shop of your choice, earning as you learn high level skills. You will gain the skills and knowledge to develop your career over 5 days a week both in the salon and at the Training School. Valuable training in the workplace or on release for training, will help you become the type barber you aspire to be.
During your time on the apprenticeship you will be paid at the apprenticeship rate. Many employers pay more as your skills develop toward an advanced level. The apprenticeship is an individualised programme of training designed to meet your needs and those of your employer. Apprentices have opportunity to further develop all aspects of the barbering industry through training in the salon, in the workplace, events and shows.
Apprentices may attend the training school weekly or be trained in the workplace with an in-house or visiting assessor. Training delivered in our City Centre premises occurs in realistic salon environments, delivered by highly skills hairdressers and barbers.
Training will include 20% of the week being dedicated to your development of skills. Sessions include theory delivery, workshops, practical salon sessions or demonstrations. Individual training and support planning underpins the skills of client consultation, cutting hair, advanced colouring, shaving and products advice, sales and related tasks/ procedures to take back to the shop and grow your confidence, display your skills and improve your client base. You will be targeted to achieve stage of the qualification supported by regular progress reviews.
You will be required to have achieved Level 2 Barbering as a minimum or display Industry experience to this level over a period. We seek motivated applicants with a real desire to work in the hairdressing and barbing industry to become the stylists and barbers of the future. Our Barbering Apprentices are enthusiastic and have a passion for the craft. That is why so many of our graduate learners achieve their qualifications and progress in their career.
The qualification is planned individually. The apprentices gradually build skills through targeted training and assessment building toward achievement. Apprentices work through ‘units’ to develop skills. Each unit requires development through training to learn skills to be ready for assessment. Most units of the qualification are mandatory, Apprentices and employers are offered optional units. Theory sessions inform technical knowledge that is tested by question or exam.
Where apprentices are aged 18 and under the qualification is funded by the government and European Social Fund. For apprentices aged 19+ the government requires the employer to co-invest 10% of the qualifications value. This is contributed monthly. Paid to the provider and agreed at the start of employment as an apprentice.
Barbering is an exciting and varied industry. A career in barbering can take you wherever you want and as far or as near as you wish. You may wish to work for an employer or, when your skills are developed, work for yourself with great earning potential. If you want it, this is career where you can realise your ambition through hard work.
Progression routes are in the salon, demonstrating or working for a manufacturer, TV, Theatre and film, working abroad in the most exotic places in the world, teaching, training or as many barbers do, create a name for yourself specialising in aspects of the industry such as shaving.
MJTS staff have many years’ experience in the industry, they will motivate your learning with guests, competitions and events. Throughout your apprenticeship we will offer you advice and guidance on which path is right for you and more importantly how to get there, including what qualifications, training or experience is required.

An apprenticeship is a real job with training. You will be issued a contract, commitment to apprenticeship and receive the same benefits as any employed person. Salary statutory entitlements may vary between employers however, they will always meet the apprenticeship minimum requirements and pay.
Your contract terms will be informed and agreed an interview or job offer prior to the start of employment and issue of your contract between your employer and yourself.
