Course description

During the course students will develop the four skills of speaking, writing, reading, and listening in French to an advanced level.  In addition, students will develop their translation skills and their knowledge and understanding of French and Francophone culture and society.

The course covers the following themes:

Theme 1:

Changes to French society

  • Changes to family structures

  • The world of work

Theme 2:

Culture and art in French speaking countries

  • Music
  • The media
  • Festivals and traditions

Theme 3:

Immigration and multi-cultural French society

  • The positive impact of immigration in France
  • The challenges of immigrations and integration in France
  • The far-right

Theme 4:

The Occupation and the Resistance

  • Occupied France
  • The Vichy Regime
  • The Resistance

Literature and Film

Students are encouraged to read a range of French and francophone books and films to support their studies.  Pupils will study one film and one book in detail in preparation for Paper 2.

Exams

Paper 1: Listening, reading and translation (9FR0/01)

Written examination: 2 hours

40% of qualification

80 marks

Paper 2: Written response to works and translation (9FR0/02)

Written examination: 2 hours and 40 minutes

30% of qualifications

120 marks

Paper 3: Speaking (9FR0/03)

Internally conducted and externally assessed

25 minutes

30% of qualification

72 marks

Independent Research Project

Pupils undertake an independent research project which is assessed in the speaking exam.  Pupils can choose a topic of their choice, but it must relate to the cultural and social context of the language being studied.  Pupils discuss their findings in the speaking exam via a presentation and follow-up questions.

 

Entry requirements

You will need at least 5 9-5 grades at GCSE including English and Maths.  At least a grade B at GCSE is required to be able to cope with the linguistic demands of A Level.  These are guidelines only and every student’s application will be treated on an individual basis.

Assessment

The course is assessed by final examination and covers the four main skills and all themes.

 

Future opportunities

Learning a language equips students with transferable skills such as autonomy, resourcefulness, creativity, critical thinking, and linguistic, cultural and cognitive flexibility that will enable them to proceed to further study or employment.  In addition, it fosters their ability to learn other languages.

Studying a language to advanced level enables students to enhance their linguistic skills and promotes and develops their capacity for critical thinking.  Students develop their control of the language system to convey meaning, using spoken and written skills with increasing confidence, accuracy and independence in order to develop their ability to interact effectively with users of the language.  Studying authentic materials develops students’ appreciation of the culture and society where the language is spoken which enables them to mediate between cultures and between speakers of the language and speakers of English.
