An Extended Pathway Subject - AS level mathematics is a suitable course for those students who have performed well at GCSE level, enjoy the subject and are committed to learning new concepts. Universities look upon mathematics favourably and consider it to be excellent preparation for many courses and future careers.
A 1 year AS course covering Pure Mathematics, Statistics & Mechanics
AS level mathematics builds upon much of the work studied at GCSE, such as algebra, coordinate geometry, trigonometry and vectors. New concepts, such as calculus (differentiation and integration), are introduced. Two thirds of the AS is dedicated to Pure mathematics and one third is given to the application of real-life mathematical situations through both Statistics and Mechanics.
An average of 7- 'Attainment 8' score (largely equivalent to 4 grade 6s and 4 grade 7s) across 8 highest GCSEs including English & at least a grade 6 in GCSE Maths
AS Maths consists of two externally-examined papers. Students must complete both assessments in May/June in any single year – Paper 1 (2 hours) covers the Pure Maths content and counts for 2/3 of the qualification; Paper 2 (1 hour) covers the applied content and comprises two sections: Section A – Statistics and Section B - Mechanics. Calculators can be used in both of the assessments.
AS level Maths is highly regarded by universities and employers. Students who study AS-level Maths may go on to study degree courses in Mathematics related courses such as Economics, Accounting, Physics, Business Studies, Computer Sciences and Mechanical Engineering, to name just a few. Potential career opportunities are extremely widespread - from Business and Finance through to Therapy Professionals!
