Course description

Why are carrots that particular shade of orange? Why can't you get polythene wet? Because the world is made of chemicals, it is simply amazing the things that chemistry can explain!

Developing Fuels. How fuels work and how can we get more energy out for less pollution. 
Elements of Life. Where elements come from; spectroscopy and patterns in properties. 
Elements from the Sea. Chemicals and the sea, and how sea water is used in industry. 
The Atmosphere. What is really going on with the ozone layer and global warming, and how big a problem is it anyway? 
What's in a Medicine? Modern methods for making and purifying drugs, including instrumental analysis. 
The Thread of Life. How proteins are made and how it's structure affects it's properties. 
The Steel Story. Steel, rusting (or not!) and electrochemistry.

Entry requirements

B grades at Core and Additional science or B grades in two separate sciences (including the science selected to study).

Assessment

Previous external exams plus teacher marked/externally moderated coursework.
