English Language and Literature at Merchant Taylors' Girls' School

Course description

At AS Level two modules will be studied. The first of these is an Introduction to the Study of English Language and Literature through an anthology of short texts on the theme, Travel, Transport and Locomotion. The focus will be the analysis and comparison of texts. The second module is a coursework one and involves the production of two pieces of coursework, one of which is creative. Both pieces of coursework are based on a pair of thematically linked texts. Raymond Chandler’s The Big Sleep, Edgar Allen Poe’s Assorted Stories, George Orwell’s 1984 and Thomas More’s Utopia have been studied. Lower Sixth are currently studying Harry Potter and Alice in Wonderland.

At A2 Level the Talk in Literature and Life option focuses on the analysis of spontaneous and crafted speech. This module also involves the study of a drama text eg Shakespeare.

Finally, the last module is coursework-based and involves the production of one or two pieces of original writing based on two literary texts or extracts of different genres from a prescribed list of authors.

If you want variety and the opportunity to do some creative writing then this is probably the option for you.
