Level 2 Diploma in Painting & Decorating at Bournville College

Course description

This intermediate award builds on the knowledge and skills gained at Level 1 and provides further opportunity for development toward a career as a painter and decorator.

Course content

The course consists of both practical and written units which must be completed to the awarding body criteria.
These include:
Health, safety and welfare in construction
Principles of construction work
Erecting and dismantling access equipment
Preparing surfaces for decoration
Applying paint systems by brush and roller to complex surfaces
Hanging standard papers to walls and ceilings
Producing specialist finishes for decorative work
Creating and applying colour

Entry requirements

A relevant qualification at Level 1, all applicants must successfully pass an aptitude test, an interview will assess your suitability and interest in the subject.


Students will be assessed on a continuous basis throughout the course. Assessments will be predominantly practical in nature. However, each practical unit has a written job-knowledge paper associated with the skills for that unit.  You will also be required to complete 2 written assignments during the course.

Future opportunities

On successful completion you may apply to continue your studies in Painting and Decorating at level 3.
