Accounting AS/A Level at St Thomas More Catholic School
Accounting is a financial information system where data is organised so that ideas and arguments can be presented and good business decisions are possible. AS specifications introduce theory and practice, applying concepts and principles to various accounting situations.
A2 develops Financial Accounting and introduces Management Accounting to provide an excellent foundation for further study at professional level.
This subject is particularly useful to students seeking a worthwhile and well paid career in business management and accountancy. Those who enjoy working with figures and solving problems will enjoy the challenge of the course.
Students will develop the transferable skills of numeracy, communication, ICT and the application, presentation, interpretation, analysis and evaluation of information. Students will also develop a capacity for methodical and critical thought and learn to present information in a clear, coherent and effective manner.
Having learnt to keep records of business transactions and prepare final accounts and balance sheets students then move on to Management Accounting which involves planning budgets and evaluating financial information in order to make decisions and discuss the implications
For careers in Business Management the accounting, reporting and interpretation skills will be of great benefit. The course opens up many opportunities in the financial sector such as Auditing, Banking, Local Authority work, Management Accounting, Credit Control, Taxation and Insolvency work.
Many students progress to follow professional or degree courses in Accountancy or Finance upon completion of this course. We are proud that from these beginnings several have reached Chartered status.
