Applied Science BTEC Level 2 at St Helens College

Course description

If you would like a career in science, this course is a great introduction for you.

You'll cover scientific principles, chemistry applications and biological systems, whilst studying anatomy and physiology, forensic science and science in medicine.

Course content

During this course, you will cover the following units:

  • Scientific principles
  • Science and the world of work

You will also study four specialist units from the following:

  • Chemistry applications
  • Physical science applications
  • Biological systems
  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Forensic science applications
  • Science in medicine

Entry requirements

Four GCSEs at grade D are usually required. There is some flexibility and you will be considered as an individual.

English and maths forms an important part of your future, ensuring you achieve the best success in your chosen career. But don't worry, if you haven't got the desired grades, we will still have a course available for you.


You will be assessed through a combination of assignments, projects, case studies, laboratory work and presentations.

Financial information

If you are a school leaver, aged 16-18, (under the age of 19 on or before 31st August 2016), you do not pay tuition fees or examination and registration fees and may be eligible for additional support depending on your financial situation.

Future opportunities

Once you've completed this course, you may choose to further your studies at a more advanced level with our level 3 qualification.
In the future, you may want to work in quality control, analytical chemistry, forensic science, medical laboratory testing or scientific research.
