Music at Bodmin College

Course description

This A’ Level specification is appealing, accessible and approachable for all students with a musical background and passion. Through both years on the course, students will study modules in Listening and Analysis, Composition and Performance.

The Listening module covers a wide spectrum of musical genres from the Baroque Period through to Popular song from 1960 to the present day.Current Set works are Beethoven’s 1st Symphony, Elgar’s 1st Symphony and Shostakovich’s 5th Symphony.

Students also focus on an Area of Study to analyse a specific genre of music in more depth. Current Areas of Study are Musical Theatre and Four Decades of Jazz and Blues (1910-1950).

The Composition module allows students to develop their creativity through producing a composition in a style of their choice lasting approximately 5 minutes (AS) or 7 minutes (A2).

The Performance module encourages students to explore a range of genres on their instrument or voice and prepare for a recital lasting 15 minutes towards the end of each year.

Entry requirements

Students should have GCSE Music at grade C or higher to obtain a placeon this course.

Students who have achieved a BTEC level 2+ at Merit or higher will also be considered.

Students should be at least grade 5 standard on their instrument or voice
