A Level History at The John of Gaunt School
Students with an enquiring mind will find this a fascinating course. You will study Modern World History in the twentieth century ranging from Modern British History to the rise and fall of Nazi Germany. The course offers you the opportunity to specialise in either US or Russian history and undertake a special investigation into a historical subject of your choice. The course will help you to develop important skills such as research, analysis, decision-making, presentation delivery using a variety of media, and team work.
How can we hope to understand the present if we have no comprehension of the past?
British Foreign Policy during the Cold War, the end of the Empire, nuclear issues, GB and Europe, role of Thatcher, GB’s role today.
The establishment and experience of Nazi and Communist dictatorship in 1933 and 1945-63 respectively and the imposition and experience of Democracy in West Germany.
This theme focuses on the struggle of citizens in the United States to gain equality before the law without regard to ethnic origin, gender or wealth. This includes a study of African Americans, Native Americans, Trade Unions and Women or The theme focuses on the nature of Russian Government and its impact on the Russian people and society. This includes a study of the similarities and differences between the autocratic rule of the Tsars to 1917 and the subsequent Communist dictatorships.
One piece of coursework is based on a study of Roosevelt’s America, focusing on an examination of a number of different historical interpretations of the period or this piece of coursework is based on a study of Lenin, the Russian revolutions of 1917 and the establishment of Bolshevik rule, again focusing on different historical interpretations. The other piece of coursework is a personal investigation by the candidate on a controversial historical issue of their choice.
*For modules 3 and 4 you will all study either American or Russian History, but this will be dependent on who is teaching the course.
A Level – OCR HISTORY A
This is through examinations only at AS Level and through a combination of examinations and coursework at A Level.
This course will give a real advantage to students wishing to study History, Archaeology, Cultural Studies and Heritage Studies. It is a recommended course if you are interested in studying Law at university.
The course will prepare you for a range of opportunities in the heritage industries as well as a variety of careers ranging from Journalism, Law, Publishing, Management Consultancy and Politics to the Civil and Diplomatic Services and teaching.
