Level 3 Business Certificates at Ilfracombe Academy
In the Certificate form, 3 units are assessed, equivalent to AS Level, studied over a one year period. A further 3 units, in the second year, leads to the Introductory Diploma, equivalent to a full A level.
Year 12 - Certificate Stage (2 Mandatory, I Optional)
Unit 1 The business environment – Understanding the different types of business and how they are influenced by the wider environment
Unit 2 Business resources – Developing understanding of managing core resources available to business, including human, physical, technological and financial resources.
Unit 12 Recruitment and selection in business - Understanding of the process that a business has to go through when recruiting staff
Year 13 - Introductory Diploma Stage (3 Optional)
Unit 4 Business Accounting - Understanding the need for accounting and be able to create and use some of the most common financial accounts and their related documents.
Unit 16 Aspects of contract and business law - Understanding the relevant sections of contract law and the rights and responsibilities for both businesses and consumers that are contained within them
Unit 8 Management accounting - Interpreting the type of financial data that managers might be given in the day to day running of a business.
A minimum Grade C in English Language and Mathematics is required. Candidates suited to advanced study are welcome.
Learning outcomes are graded at Pass, Merit, Distinction, with 10 credits awarded for each successful unit. A Distinction* is available for high achievement across the full qualification. The Certificate requires 30 credits, and the Introductory Diploma 60 credits.
For university entrance, the Cambridge Tec is a useful pathway for those who wish to study a vocational course in Business Administration or related subjects. With UCAS points, it qualifies for more traditional degree courses as well. Students can also access combined degrees involving Business and another key subject. There are also pathways to foundation degrees, as found at Petroc; and of course, to the world of work and work-based training.
