Design & Technology - Product Design GCSE at St Peter's School, Huntingdon
What will I learn? You will be involved in experiences that will develop innovation and flair when designing products. This will be carried out through modelling ideas and using a range of materials and media including ICT. The approach is participatory and experimental in nature, which means that you have a chance to share and develop ideas with other students.This provides an exciting and challenging progression from Key Stage 3. Areas that could be investigated may include publishing, packaging and product styling. This qualification would provide a good grounding for a range of careers, which could include advertising, architecture, animation and product engineering. How will I be taught? You will be taught in a mixed ability group. You will take part in practical and written tasks. You need to be well organised and prepared for lessons. The qualification is a double award taught in four periods a week that covers the following areas: · Product Design · Design Challenge · Product Manufacture · Design Influences How will I be assessed? You will be assessed as follows: · On product design and manufacture. This accounts for 60% of your final mark. · Your knowledge of design influences e.g. investigating sustainable design. This is a one hour examination and accounts for 20% of the mark. · A six-hour design challenge, which accounts for 20% of the mark.
You could take this course to prepare for advanced level courses such as an A/AS Level in Design and Technology or you may need to strengthen your grades by completing a foundation or intermediate vocational qualification. With further training, you could go into a job related to Design and Technology and Electronics such as an Technician, Electrician or Design Engineer. You could also go straight into employment and do further training or part time study with the support of your employer.
