Pre-Teaching at Pendleton Sixth Form College

Course description

If you are interested in a career as a teacher then the new Pre-Teaching course is for you. The course gives you a broad basis of study of the early years sector whilst also offering you the opportunity to gain hands on experience within a primary school.  Teaching is an area that is always in demand and this course gives you a real taste of what a career in teaching will be like.  You learn about the health, education and social aspects of caring for children and their families

Course content

You will study how a child devleops and learn how to enhance learning through education and play.  Topics include developement of children's communication, literacy and numeracy skills and children's physical development, care and health needs,  You will also complete and study the current research in early years practice.  Units will also include looking at different psychology theories of development, such as Piaget and Vygotsky.

Entry requirements

3 Bs/5s and 3Cs/4s at GCSE

Assessment

The course has a mixture of assessments and includes both an examination and coursework.  There is also a practical element that you will complete, which includees 50 hours experience within a nursery/educational setting.  Here you will gain first-hand experience of helping children to develop and teach within a school.  From these work experience hours, you will need to reflect on your practice and be assessed on your assessment and planning for the lessons you have devised.

Financial information

Full time courses are free to 16-18 year olds who are EU citizens

Future opportunities

This qualifcation is designed to support progression to Higher Education when taken as part of a programme of study with other A Levels.  Many students who wish to teach in primary school would have the advantage of studying alongside other A Level courses and gaining experience of working within the educationsector as part of this course.  Other career paths may include nursing, nursery and primary teaching, psychology, hospital play specialist and other related professional roles
