Health and Social Care A Level at Newent Community School and SIxth Form Centre

Course description

Health and Social Care is studied in 8 modules which gives the qualification of 2 A Levels over two years. The course can also be studied as an AS Level Single or Double Award or an A2 Level Single award.

Course content

To achieve the 2 A Level qualifications, students study 8 units of work according to the specifications. The portfolio units require students to be actively engaged in practical activities linked to the specific units. A wide range of units are studied which include Effective Care and Communication; Understanding Health Conditions; Educating Children and Young People; Practitioner Roles; Food and Fitness. Students will participate in visits to related professionals.

The course enables students to develop both a broad understanding of health and social care principles as well as the possibility to focus on specific areas such as children and young people, environmental health issues and diet.

Entry requirements

A minimum of 4 GCSE’s at Grade C or above.

Assessment

The course is divided into units, which are either, internally assessed and then externally verified through portfolios or tested externally in June. To gain the qualification, both methods of assessment must be shown.
