AS Level Media Studies at The Rugeley Sixth Form Academy

Course description

The media is something that every human being is subject to on a daily basis. From advertising, to the internet, from Hollywood to Coronation Street. Media Studies is an exciting subject that will enable a student to dissect a piece of media, understand how it works and create a media text of their own. Skills and Attributes that students need to be successful: Students need to be dedicated and conscientious as two out of the four units are independent study which means that candidates must be able to self motivate and evaluate. They must also be willing to work with others and have an active interest in the media. How the course is assessed: AS consists of two units: •Investigating Media. In this unit students will study media texts, concepts and contexts; platforms including e-media, broadcasting and print; printed communications and cross media studies from broadcast fiction, film fiction, documentary, lifestyle music, news and sport. Exam •Creating Media. This unit will involve independent research, preproduction and planning a practical production; technical and creative skills; knowledge of relevant codes and conventions; relevance of platforms and target audiences; production in broadcast, e-media and conventional print media and evaluation. Coursework. What students do after successful completion: Higher Education; employment in media industries; apply their skills in the fields of IT and multimedia; have a better understanding of how the media works on an everyday basis.

Students should fulfill the general entry requirements to study A levels at the Academy.

You could take this course to complement other advanced level courses such as English or to prepare for the A2 part of an Advanced GCE in Media Studies, which could lead onto higher education to study Media, related courses within the Arts an Humanities, or more general higher education courses. With Further training, you could go into a job related to media such as a Journalist, News Reporter, TV Producer, Public Relations Officer You could also go straight into a job as the AS GCE is a recognised qualification that will help you develop the skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for, especially in the media and Communication sectors. You could take this course with other advanced level courses such as English, to prepare for higher education in Media-related courses, related courses in the Arts or Humanities, or more general higher education courses.
