Personal Training & Instructing Diploma Level 3 at Bolton College

Course description

Our full-time study programmes are designed to maximise your career prospects and widen your options for further or higher study.

The aim of this Level 3 qualification is to recognise the skills, knowledge and competence required for an individual to work unsupervised as a personal trainer.

If you have an interest in working as a Personal Trainer, or a desire to work in the sports industry, then this course may be for you. You will learn how to develop, design and tailor exercise programmes, and how to improve the fitness levels and participation in gym-based fitness activities for a variety of clients.

Work experience is also an integral part of our study programmes, enabling you to gain essential exposure to the world of work.

Course content

What you’ll learn 

During this course, you will cover:

  • Anatomy & Physiology
  • Sports conditioning
  • The principles of Exercise & Fitness, and Programming & Nutrition
  • Instructing and Adapting Personal Training Sessions
  • Effective Working Relationships with Clients
  • Health, Safety & Welfare in the Fitness Environment
  • Planning and Delivering a Group Exercise Session in an Outdoor Environment
  • Business Planning

We encourage our students to continue their English & maths study to Level 3

Elements of study

Your programme consists of the following elements:

  • Study of your chosen vocational subject (50% of your programme)
  • English and maths (continued until the achievement of GCSE grade 4 (C) or equivalent)
  • Employability skills (e.g. punctuality, attendance, communication and team work)
  • Work experience (giving you a taste of working life)
  • Tutorial & personal development (e.g. healthy living, volunteering and citizenship skills)

Entry requirements

You should be at least 18 years old and have awareness of using a gym. We ask that you have a passion to teach and instruct within the Health & Fitness Industry.

We also ask that you have the CYQ Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing qualification.

Assessment

A variety of assessment methods are used throughout the year-long programme, both internally and external assessed.

Financial information

Government-funded Further Education courses are usually free if you are aged 16-18 and are a British or European Union resident.  Financial help is available for some students, whose families are on low income. Future opportunities

Short-term:

Upon completion of this course, you will be in the perfect position to go on to an HND or degree course.

You could take this short course with a related GCE or other qualification to prepare for Further Education in areas of sport such as BTEC Higher Nationals in Sport Management or related degree programmes. You could also go on to study an NVQ vocational qualification in Sports Development, which could be work-based. With further training, you could go in to a job related to sport such as a Sport Coach, Trainer or Gym Instructor.

Long-term:

We’ve educated hundreds of sports enthusiasts over the last 60 years who went on to become personal trainers, leisure centre managers, physiotherapists and much more.

Training in the sports and fitness industry will provide you with numerous career opportunities for a long and fulfilling professional future. If you want to be actively involved in sports and fitness, you could earn £20,000 a year as a Fitness Instructor.

Following further study you could work as:

  • A Fitness Instructor where you could earn between £14,000 and £20,000 a year, depending on experience.
  • A Personal Trainer, earning between £12,000 and £20,000 a year.
  • A PE Teacher, earning between £22,000 and £32,000 a year.

Ofsted also agrees; in February we were inspected and graded 2 for ‘Good’. Ofsted highlighted the fact that our learners develop good employability and personal skills and that a high proportion progress to Apprenticeships, employment or Higher Education.

  • Visiting local service providers
  • Taking part in enrichment activities – such as social and sporting events, and getting involved in fundraising activities

Support

The College will support you throughout your time here; you will receive personal support from both your tutor and your Learning & Development Mentor. Support is also available from our dedicated Student Services team for personal, financial and careers guidance.

During their recent visit in February 2017, Ofsted commended the College for its provision of “well targeted information, advice and careers guidance, which meets individual needs and enables learners to make informed choices about the next steps in their learning and career”.
