Media Studies A level at Edgbarrow School

Course description

The Advanced Level Media course challenges students to consider the nature of Media in contemporary society.  Through practical coursework students take on many roles including: photographer, editor, director and camera operator.  The specification integrates theoretical and practical approaches by requiring students to reflect on their coursework experiences in the examination.  The examination also challenges students to study current debates in media.  All this is underpinned by the study of media language, institutions, audience and representation.

Course content

Students will learn skills of active research, using selection processes and analytical skills.  The course requires both independent and group work so communication, time keeping and organisation are essential.  The use of varied technology is required for the practical coursework.  Students will use a blog system to record their progress and teachers will regularly post feedback on their work.

Students will engage in debates surrounding the media including issues raised by media ownership, within the music industry, press regulation and theoretical concepts like post-modernism
