Art & Design BTEC Diploma Level 2 at PETROC

Course description

No matter which areas of art and design get your creative juices flowing, you'll really enjoy this thoroughly practical study programme where you can explore and develop your skills in a range of art and design activities.

Course content

The qualification gives you the freedom to develop your own individual ideas and prepare a portfolio of work for progression. The programme is made up of a range of general art and design and some specialist units. All students will do the core units that explore drawing, 2D & 3D materials and techniques, researching artists' work, developing ideas and producing finished work. Beyond that, you will be able to explore two more specialist units. Completing this course successfully earns the equivalent to four GCSEs at grade A-C.

Entry requirements

All entrants must hold 4 GCSEs at grade D or equivalent or above, to preferably include GCSE Maths at grade 3 or above and GCSE English Language at grade 3 or above.
Entrants holding a grade 2 or a 3 in GCSE Maths will study towards GCSE Maths to gain grade 4 or above. Those with a grade 1 or below will study Level 1 Functional Skills Maths and retake GCSE Maths in the following year.

Entrants holding a grade 2 or a 3 in GCSE English Language will study towards GCSE English Language to gain grade 4 or above. Those with a grade 1 or below will study the Level 1 Functional Skills English and retake GCSE in the following year. 

At the end of the year all learners are expected to have completed and achieved all the components of their Level 2 Study Programme and achieved a graded improvement in their Maths and English Language studies before being allowed to progress.

You will be required to bring a portfolio of work to your interview.


You will be given regular feedback about how you are progressing and you will receive either Pass, Merit or Distinction grades for each unit and also for the overall qualification. There is no examination for this course as it is continuously assessed and externally modified.

Future opportunities

Most of our students who are thinking about some aspect of art and design as a career, will choose to progress to the Extended Diploma in Art and Design here at Petroc, as the gateway to higher education and the world of employment.

Further information

The course is based in our purpose built art department, with darkrooms, print room, a mac suite and an open plan art room. Specialist equipment is available to all students including cameras and most art and design studio equipment.
