Further Mathematics at Ringwood School Academy

Course description

The areas of study for further mathematics are the same as for mathematics but your studies are deeper and more satisfying,taking you to the more challenging and exciting levels of the subject. Scientists, engineers, social scientists, geographers,economists and the business community derive power from mathematics as an enabling tool.


Course content

Further Mathematics introduces new areas of study, such as

  • the complex number system
  • polar co-ordinates
  • and matrices

whilst further developing the topics covered in GCE Mathematics, particularly calculus.

Entry requirements

Students are required to have completed A2 Level Mathematics typically by the end of Year 12.


You will sit 3 written papers for AS Level Further Mathematics and 6 written papers in total for A2 Level Further Mathematics.

  • There is one written paper for each unit studied.
  • Each of the equally weighted examination papers lasts 1 hour and 30 minutes.
  • Modules will be examined in June.
  • Calculators (including graphical calculators) are allowed in all papers.


Financial information

Students will be expected to have their own Scientific calculator, and may wish to buy a
graphical calculator as well. Students will be expected to print materials from the  Learning Zone as required.

Future opportunities

Most universities offer degree courses in Mathematics, on its own and in combination with other areas of study. The skills covered in Mathematics are also highly sought after in a wide variety of other disciplines.

Further Mathematics is compulsory for some university Mathematics or Physics  courses. It is also highly desirable for those students wishing to study engineering.
