Course description

The level 3 Diploma in Theatrical, Special Effects, Hair and Media Make-up will give you the practical skills and knowledge required to gain employment or progression within the Theatrical and Media Make-up Industry.

The course may include visits to exhibitions and shows.
 
During the course you will build up a portfolio of evidence. You will have to work on clients to complete the qualification. You must ensure you can provide some of your own clients and have family members and friends who are willing to come in to the college for treatments with you

Course content

The qualification covers a range of theatrical media and make up techniques. It is made up of 10 units 

  • Working with colleagues within the beauty related industries
  • Monitor and maintain health and safety practice in the salon
  • Creative hairdressing design skills
  • Design and apply face and body art
  • Fashion and photographic make-up
  • Apply airbrush make-up to the face
  • Media make-up
  • Apply prosthetic pieces and bald caps
  • Style and fit postiche
  • Camouflage make-up

Entry requirements

To enrol on this course you must have successfully completed the Level 2 Diploma in Hair and Media Make-up. Work experience in the industry is essential for Level 3. To support your application you will be required to carry out a trade test and theory test. Your application will need to be supported by a reference from your tutor and an interview.

Assessment

You will be assessed working on clients in the Aspire Hair and Beauty Salons on the campus. You will also have to build a portfolio of evidence. Your theory knowledge will be assessed through online exams and written assignments which will be scheduled throughout the year.

Future opportunities

You can gain employment as a Theatrical and media make-up artist working on location for TV or film, as part of a theatre production set, on a media photographic shoot or working for a product manufacturer as a trainer . You could also progress onto University level courses studying Theatre and Media Studies a Fashion or Photographic degree or an Art degree.
