French AS level at Wren Academy
French AS and A Level allow students to develop their language skills and use them in real contexts to investigate aspects of culture in French speaking countries. Building on prior learning, students will consider questions such as “Is the Media in France a force for good or evil?” and “Why are there so many strikes in France?”
Research shows that knowledge of French boosts students' understanding of languages in general and enables them to use their own language more effectively. French learners have stronger vocabulary skills in English, a better understanding of the language, and improved literacy in general.
Students will learn to express their views on a wide range of topics in French, whilst developing their understanding of the language and culture. Students will learn to deal with unfamiliar cultural ideas, and become better equipped to adapt and cope in a fast-changing world.
Unit 1 Speaking Exam (30%)
Students will plan and participate in a discussion with their teacher about:
- Popular culture
- Healthy living
Unit 2 Listening, Reading and Writing (70%)
Students will understand and respond to stimulus material in French. These materials will be based on the sane topics as those studied for the speaking exam.
Students will need to gain an A or above in GCSE to pursue this subject at AS and A2.
In Year 12, the speaking exam will carry a weighting of 30% of the mark for the year, whilst the Listening, Reading and Writing paper carries a weighting of 70%. The mark achieved in Year 12 is carried forward to form 50% of the A2.
French AS and A level are highly respected by top universities, and would compliment studies in any other subject. Students of French can go on to a wide range of careers, including Journalism, the Civil Service, Public Relations and Banking.
