Level 1 Hair and Beauty at North Shropshire College - NSC

Course description

Our well-equipped commercially run hair salon provides opportunities to develop skills within a commercial setting.  You will be expected to build up a client base of paying customers in order in order to complete the practical assessments.  This is a key feature of the course.

The level 1 NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy is based on the National Occupational Standards for Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy. It is a job ready qualification which requires learners to demonstrate in the workplace the skills and knowledge required in the hairdressing and beauty therapy industry. This qualification confirms to occupational competence and the job readiness of the learner.

Mandatory Units -

  • Shampoo and condition hair
  • Colour removal
  • Blow drying hair using different equipment
  • Prepare for hair services and maintain work areas
  • Ensure responsibility for actions to reduce risks to health and safety
  • Prepare and maintain salon treatment work areas
  • Contribute to the development of effective working
  • Manicure
  • Facials
  • Basic Make up
  • Reception duties.

Emphasis is placed on practical skills.  Work will be continually assessed throughout the course.  The course consists of both theory and practical elements which all have to be passed in order for you to be successful.

Assessment is via:-

  • Portfolio of Evidence
  • Practical Demonstration
  • Gola on line tests.
     

This Level 1 NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy is made up of 41 credits, 5 mandatory units and a minimum of 24 credits from the optional units. 

All courses and treatments take place in our state of the art Visage Hair and Beauty Salon.  The department now has sauna and steam facilities. New modern nail bars allow for a range of nail treatments. The hairdressing salon is equipped with 17 individual bays with adjustable chairs, overhead driers and storage cupboards.

This course is suitable for individuals wishing to work within the Hair and Beauty industry. You will need to have an interest in Hair and Beauty and be able to demonstrate this at interview.

Please remember note that all assessments take place on fee paying clients, therefore you will need to ensure a supply of clients organised by yourself to complete hairdressing assessments.

Entry requirements

No formal requirements for Level 1 are set but a good standard of education including communication. A high level of professionalism is required at all times in addition to an interest in being creative

Successful college interview.

Assessment

Each subject is assessed with a practical task to show you are competent plus a multiple choice question test.  Each practical task is completed within a set time limit and you will have plenty of opportunity to practice before being entered for any assessment.

Financial information

You will need to use hair and beauty tools whilst completing practical tasks, kits can be purchased through the college. 

Uniform is approximately £60.

Future opportunities

Employment opportunities include careers as Trainee Hair Stylist (L1) or Salon Receptionist.  Alternatively you could progress to NVQ 2 Hairdressing, NVQ 2 Beauty Therapy or a Trainee Beauty Therapist.

The level 1 NVQ Diploma in Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy is suitable for people who have an interest in working in the industry. Anyone who would like to undertake hairdressing and Beauty but do not have the relevant entry requirements. The qualification provides progression opportunities for those with intentions of progressing into a more technical role or onto a level 2 qualification.
