A-Level (AS/A2) in Critical Thinking at Archbishop Holgate's School

Course description

Students studying Critical Thinking will have opportunities to develop the skills of analysis and evaluation, and to present some of their own reasoning. Students are then assessed on their ability to make critical responses to information and its sources, and to draw reliable conclusions from it. The course will develop skills and encourage attitudes which complement other studies across the curriculum, while preparing students for the academic and intellectual demands of higher education, as well as future employment and general living. It will also introduce new concepts, terms and techniques that will enable students to reflect more constructively on their own and others' reasoning You will be encouraged to: • analyse and evaluate beliefs and knowledge claims in a variety of contexts • recognise and evaluate assumptions • evaluate a range of different kinds of reasoning • make connections and synthesise information and arguments • generate your own arguments and express them clearly

Future opportunities

You could take this course with other advanced level courses to prepare for higher education in areas of critical thinking, social sciences or more general higher education courses. With further training, you could go into a job related to critical thinking by working in areas of research, marketing, public relations, and human resources. You could go straight into a job as the course helps you develop the basic skills, knowledge and understanding that many employers across lots of industries are looking for. You could take this course to complement other advanced level courses or to prepare for the A2 part of an Advanced GCE in Critical Thinking, which could lead onto higher education in areas of critical thinking, social sciences or more general higher education courses. With further training, you could go into a job related to critical thinking by working in areas of research, marketing, public relations, and human resources. You could go also go straight into a job as the AS GCE is a recognised qualification that will help you develop the basic skills, knowledge and understanding that many employers across lots of industries are looking for.
