Course description

A-level Further Mathematics is designed to broaden and deepen your mathematical knowledge and skills, which will be invaluable across all disciplines and careers.

Paper 1: Further Pure Mathematics 1
Examined in May/June - Calculator permitted
Examination length is 1 hour 30 mins (25%)

Paper 2: Further Pure Mathematics 2
Examined in May/June - Calculator permitted
Examination length is 1 hour 30 mins (25%)

Students will study one of the following four options; Further Pure Mathematics 3; Further Statistics 1; Further Mechanics 1; Decision Mathematics 1.

Paper 3: Further Mathematics Option 1
Examined in May/June – Calculator permitted
Examination length is 1 hour 30 mins (25%)

Students will study one of the following seven options; Further Pure Mathematics 4; Further Statistics 1 or 2; Further Mechanics 1 or 2; Decision Mathematics 1 or 2

Entry requirements

For A-Level Further Mathematics you need at least four GCSEs at grade C or above, including English Language at grade 4. In addition, you need at least a grade 7 in GCSE Mathematics and a mark of 70% or higher on our algebra assessment (which is the same assessment for both Mathematics and Further Mathematics). You must also be enrolled on the A-Level Mathematics course.

A Further Mathematics qualification identifies students as having excellent analytical skills, whatever area they plan to study or work within. Indeed qualifications in this subject are highly regarded and are strongly welcomed by universities. Students who choose to study Further Mathematics are really demonstrating a strong commitment to their studies, as well as learning mathematics that is very useful for any mathematics-rich degree subject such as Engineering, Sciences, Computing or Technology as well as Mathematics itself. Whilst many courses do not specify Further Mathematics explicitly, students with Further Mathematics qualifications are strongly welcomed on any mathematics-related course and often receive preferential offers because of this.
