Design and Technology: Product Design (3-D Design) A Level at Twynham School

Course description

“Strive for perfection if everything you do. Take the best that exists and make it better. If it doesn’t exist. Design it!” (Sir Henry Royce).

Product Design A level is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject which prepares young people to live and work in the designed and made world; producing products that improve our daily lives. Creativity is a fundamental part of Product Design and many designers believe that thought-provoking, innovative design to be cornerstones of every successful product.

A level Product Design builds on the experience of GCSE Design and Technology allowing exciting opportunities to develop students’ design and manufacture skills to be able to make high quality innovative products. Combining knowledge and understanding with practical skills, activities are designed to provide breadth in creative learning and depth in the application of practical and transferable skills.

Students develop design solutions, communicating them thorough a range of strategies including computer-aided design and modelling. Products are made using a range of materials and processes, both modern and traditional considering the client’s needs and wider issues such as sustainable and responsible design.

Students have the opportunity to link their practical work to the commercial market with links to clients such as IKEA. This experience allows students to gain insight into a large company philosophy and the implications of mass production on products they design. The course provides an excellent foundation for students looking towards a career in the wide area of design and manufacturing such as engineering, product design or product development and architecture.
