Travel and Tourism at Bay House School and Sixth Form

Course description

The Travel and Tourism industry is one of the largest industries in the world, employing over three million people in the UK alone.

This course will help students to acquire a range of skills whilst developing their product knowledge and understanding of recent changes in the industry.

A third of the units are externally assessed and the remaining units are internally assessed through a portfolio of coursework, which is marked by teachers and then externally moderated.

Course content

AS LEVEL MODULES

Introducing Travel and Tourism

  • overview of the travel and tourism industry with a focus on its structure and the products and services that it provides to tourists.
  •  how the travel and tourism industry developed, examining the size and scale of the industry. 
  • present significance of the industry within the UK economy

Customer Service in Travel and Tourism

  • key principles and skills of customer service and how travel and tourism organisations aim to provide excellent customer service to their different types of customers. Students will also be expected to undertake a variety of customer-service activities to demonstrate their understanding of customer-service practices and procedures.

Travel Destinations

  • major short-haul and long-haul destinations for UK tourists, researching a variety of destinations.
  • Students will investigate two travel destinations (one short-haul and one long-haul)

 

A2 LEVEL MODULES

Tourism Development  

  • Aims and objectives of tourism development throughout the world and the positive and negative impacts of tourism development in the UK and overseas. T
  • Why tourism development needs to be managed effectively to ensure long-term sustainability.

Event Management

  • Work as part of a team to plan, carry out and evaluate a real travel and tourism project that is of interest to them.
  • Candidates will produce a business plan for their chosen project before it takes place and will also keep a log of their involvement in the project whilst it is in progress

Ecotourism

  • Study ecotourism as a growing component of the wider tourism industry
  • Conduct a research project into an ecotourism destination of their choice

  • English Language - C

Assessment

Introducing Travel and Tourism: externally assessed through a two hour written exam paper and is worth 33% of the AS mark.

Customer Service in Travel and Tourism: assessed internally through portfolio coursework and is worth 33% of the AS mark.

Travel Destinations: assessed internally through portfolio coursework and is worth 33% of the AS mark.

Tourism Development: externally assessed through a two hour written exam paper and is worth 16.7% of the total A2 mark.

Event Management: assessed internally through portfolio coursework and is worth 16.7% of the total A2 mark

Ecotourism:  assessed internally through portfolio coursework and is worth 16.7% of the total A2 mark.
