Food Technology AS AQA 2540 at Sandown Bay Academy

Course description

Food Technology has been designed to encourage candidates to take a broad view of design technology. The course itself is made up of traditional cookery, experimental work and research. The course also seeks to develop the student’s capacity to design and make products and to appreciate the complex relations between design, materials, manufacture and marketing. AS Units: Unit 1 50% of AS, 25%A level 2 hour written paper,(80) marks Based on Materials and Components and consists of 3 sections. Section 1:compulsory multiple choice. Section 2 offers a choice of one question from two. Section 3: contains one compulsory question. Unit 2: 50% of AS,25% of A level Coursework-50 hours.(80marks) Written design folder. Manufactured outcome(s) Coursework may be a single project or two smaller projects.

Entry requirements

All students require a grade C in English GCSE. Students who do not have Food Technology at GCSE should have a grade C in Science GCSE.

Future opportunities

POSSIBLE PROGRESSION: There are excellent prospects for careers from the obvious catering, dietetics, teaching Food Technology to working in the food industry developing new products, in media for the special requirements of food used in films and food photography. Some medical schools are accepting food as one of the subjects. SUGGESTED SUBJECT COMBINATION Biology is recommended, whilst photography would be useful.
