A Level Religious Studies at Merchants’ Academy

Course description

Why should I choose Religious Studies?

You should consider taking religious studies if you have an interest in, and enthusiasm for:

• A rigorous study of religion and its relation to the wider world.

• Developing your knowledge, understanding and skills appropriate to a specialist study of religion.

• Being a nosy, critical and reflective thinker.

• Analysing your own values, opinion and attitudes in the light of what you have learnt.

Course content

In year 12 you will study two topics:

• Religion and Ethics

• Religion art and the media.

In year 13 you will study:

• Philosophy and religion

• Religious Fundamentalism.

The assessments will take the form of timed exam essays. Your grades for the assessments will inform your teachers of your progress towards achieving your predicted grade. AS Examinations take place at the end of year 12 in June. You will be assessed on the topics Religion and Ethics and Religion art and the media.

Each unit is 50% of AS, 25% of A Level.

Each unit is a 1 hour 15 minute written examination.

Future opportunities

Just because you study Religious studies does not limit you to being a vicar! An A level in Religious Studies is seen by universities as a subject which will give you good foundations for a study in theology, religious studies, politics, philosophy and law - to name but a few. Ricky Gervais, Win Butler (Arcade Fire musician), Bill Clinton and David Cameron all studied some elements of Religious Studies!
