English Literature A Level at Lincoln Castle Academy

Course description

This ‘A’ level course gives students an exciting opportunity to read. Discuss and interpret some fascinating and important literature. Students are encouraged to form their own opinions and develop the skills to enable them to express their ideas effectively. This subject will enable students to become critical readers and writers. They will learn to craft their work in order to suit different purposes and audiences and to produce analytical commentaries of their own creative writing.

English Literature is an academic subject and is compatible with subjects such as History and Psychology. Disciplines which require a high degree of analytical skill will also complement the study of English Literature. Entry requirements

A grade 'B' in both English Language and English Literature is preferred although a grade 'C' is acceptable in certain circumstances; you must discuss this with the Head of Department. Strong commitment and motivation are necessary to succeed on this course. ‘AS’ and ‘A2’ English Literature should therefore only be undertaken by those for whom reading is a pleasure.

Future opportunities

Successful students of English are able to work independently and think critically. English is a flexible and respected academic subject that opens up a wide range of career choices. Analysis of text, verbal reasoning and an ability to structure ideas coherently are valuable assets particularly in subjects such as Law and Business.
