Physics A Level at Matravers School

Course description

Physics lies at the heart of Science. It is the study of the natural world, with a view to identifying patterns of behaviour. It explains the unimaginably tiny world of sub-atomic particles, and at the other extremes, the structure of the universe, its beginning, and maybe its end. It also explains how to record sounds and make biscuits that do not fall apart. The physics taught is delivered within a range of up-to-date contexts and applications. These are designed to stimulate interest and motivation whilst alerting students to many career areas. The AQA Physics course provides an extensive and exciting range of topics to enhance students’ learning and interest in physics. The outline of the course demonstrates its focus on practical activities and applications of physics.

Course content

Unit 1 The study of the fundamental properties of matter at a sub atomic level. The study of how scientists developed ideas and theories in particle physics. The study of the laws and principles of electricity. The study of how electricity is used and measured. The study of new applications of electricity such as superconductivity.

Unit 2 The study of motion, force, energy and waves. The study of the application of mechanics, materials and waves including optics. The physics of vehicle safety features and nanotechnology.
