English Language and Literature at The Blandford School

Course description

Are you interested in:  Words and how they are used?  Learning about how language works?  Reading and studying great fiction and non-fiction writing from a range of periods?  Developing your written and spoken communication skills?  Making yourself attractive to universities and employers?

Course content

As well as studying key literary and linguistic concepts, you will study 5 set texts (2 novels, a play, a poet and an anthology of non-fiction texts), you will produce pieces of your own writing in the linguistic styles and voices of characters from the nonfiction anthology in a variety of forms (letters, diaries, reports, conversations, speeches, etc). You will also write commentaries on your own writing.

Entry requirements

B in GCSE English.

Assessment

AS assessment: 2 examination papers, each being 1.5 hrs and closed book (i.e. No texts allowed in the exam room). A-Level assessment: 2 examination papers, 3 hours and 2 hours, and non-exam assessment (2,500-3000 words).
